reading with excellence

A blog I was reading sparked a wild fire of thoughts so I put then down. Our cultures influence on one’s conscience is both consistent and intense. What is a man to do? Get in the word! Yet what should I do when my reading gets as trivial as life can be? to this I think Colson can help:

"The best way to overcome banality is to demand something better—to seek out, as Paul wrote in Philippians, whatever is noble, right, pure, admirable, and to 'think on these things. Paul is commanding us to discipline ourselves to reflect on excellence. And he doesn't limit that to spiritual things, either. The command applies to everything—the music we listen to, the books and magazines we read, the films we watch." 1.

The world’s cure for banality is to go down deeper into sin; the word’s cure is to lift our thoughts into heavenly places of divine meaning. We are to reflect on excellence and in the word, God’s excellences are consistently presented.

The Word does not just insolate us but elevate us. As we read, our thoughts are lifted higher than the nominal mental foothills we tread on a daily bases, out of the murky scum of MTV and other subtle means of mind control. It is from this higher place of judgment informed by the Word that our conscience is shaped. So what do you think about the word’s power to lift our thoughts to higher places? The truths of scripture don’t just divide the dark it gives us a light that is a satisfaction of a greater desire. We are given God and our desire for sin slowly pals in the shimmering brilliance of his glory.
