Brain-less men and the capacity for greatness in humanity

French doctors are amazed that a 44-year-old civil servant with an abnormally small brain has led a normal life with a slightly lower than normal IQ, according to a report on Physorg.com.

Doctors said the father of two went to the Hopital de la Timone in Marseille with mild weakness in his left leg. He was given a CT scan and an MRI, which showed that his cerebral cavities or ventricles had massively expanded, according a case history to be published in Saturday's Lancet.

"The brain itself, meaning the grey matter and white matter, was completely crushed against the sides of the skull," Dr. Lionel Feuillet told AFP. "The images were most unusual... the brain was virtually absent."

The condition is called Dandy Walker complex and is a genetically sporadic disorder that occurs in one out of every 25,000 live births, mostly in females. Although many with Dandy Walker develop dramatic symptoms from the condition, such as an enlarged skull, jerky muscle movements and problems with the nerves that control the face, the condition also can develop unnoticed.

Doctors believe this man's condition could stem from surgery he had at the age of 6 months, when he suffered hydrocephalus or water on the brain and needed an operation to drain a buildup of spinal fluid.

Subsequent tests have revealed that the man has an IQ of 75, with a verbal IQ of 84 and performance IQ of 70. The bulk of people in society have a minimum IQ of 85.

Despite this, "the man has been able to lead a life that can be considered normal," said Feuillet. "Even if he has a slight intellectual handicap, this has not hampered his development or building social networks."

The glory of humanity: refelcting the eternal nature of divine life.

This article raises many questions like: Is this man the human embodiment of homer Simpson? Do the cut downs like, knuckle head, brainless twit and bubble head now become discriminatory hate speech? Has the phrase, He has nothing upstairs moved from clich̩ to Fact? Seriously РAs one read such reports questions about human existence and what it means to be human rise to the Basil forebrain. A certain ominous yet wispy seine of greatness lingers in the air. Central to this oddity is the intuition that Perhaps there is more to being human that mere biology.

Biology dose not reign over consciousness. The consciousness holds court over and beyond biology. Doubtless many will say this is an anomaly, to that I say “True – yet it is just such cases that give us insight into the deeper caves of our existence and we find there the resilient creative power of human life (a life in the image of one greater). It is this transcendent power that rises higher than we think and from that place of spirit we launch out to live beyond our biology.” This view may be Cartesian in formulation but the question of the seat of the soul still remains. Such examples like those with “Dandy Walker complex” still remain as looks into the abyss and signs in the fog. In them we see deeply into the dizzying heights of what it is to be human and in them they point through the fog reminding us there is more ahead.

Journey on
Human all to human is what I read,
the light of divine reflection in life indeed
Mystery on mystery, evidence of what I see,
Am I more than what I seem to be?

Walk the night and sleep the day
Shine the light on Dante’s way
to see transcendence over biology
the knowledge of how alien I am to me
